Special Notes: Ammonites evolved in the Devonian period and were extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period and are characterized by series of internal chambers that allowed animal to control buoyancy. In rare cases, the fossil is replaced with pyrite crystals that grow into the crystal forms of the original fossilizing minerals.
